Welcome to SCNCWAVE!

Science. Water. Waves

With a 242-metre-long main basin, wave effects more than three meters high or waves 150 meters wide and innovative wave technology, we offer researchers a wide range of opportunities for cutting-edge hydrodynamic research. Whether precise wave fronts, spacious facilities and water areas or a flow channel with a width of up to ten meters and high inflow velocity – we set new standards for research and innovation.

Our focus areas range from coastal and flood protection, offshore wind power and floating PV to ship dynamics, safety technology and disaster control. In our facility, we offer large-scale, realistic and reproducible conditions for development and testing.

Members of SCNCWAVE include RWTH Aachen University, TH Cologne, the University of Duisburg-Essen and DST, the largest ship development center in Germany.

The first research project on innovative support structures for floating solar systems is already on board – and more are being planned.

Der Ort

The town of Werne

Werne is located in the heart of NRW, on the eastern edge of the Ruhr region. Around 30,000 people live here. The town’s historical sights include the parish church of St. Christophorus, the old Capuchin monastery and the traditional Sim-Jü folk festival. SURFWRLD / SCNCWAVE, an outstanding highlight, is coming soon!

The former Werne colliery

Our 17-hectare site is located directly on the River Lippe – perfect for our visionary dual project! The colliery used to be an important location for coal mining. In future, it will be home to our two flagship projects SURFWRLD and SCNCWAVE.

The Lip

The Lippe is a tributary of the Rhine and flows 220 kilometers through North Rhine-Westphalia. It also passes through Werne and its bank filtrate supplies us with the drinking-quality water we need for our huge wave pools in the SURFWRLD and SCNCWAVE. And the view of the Lippe floodplains? Simply beautiful!

Our plant

A look at the plans for SURFWRLD and SCNCWAVE reveals that great things are being created here! A huge wave pool with innovative wave technology, a rapid surfing facility, beach volleyball courts, a coworking space and plenty of room to chill out await you in our facility – plus a great culinary variety in our restaurant.
