The place

The town of Werne

Located in the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia, Werne sits on the eastern edge of the Ruhr region and is home to around 30,000 residents. Its historic highlights include St Christophorus Church, the old Capuchin monastery, and the traditional Sim-Jü fair. Soon, SURFWRLD and SCNCWAVE will add a landmark of their own to this vibrant town!

The Former Werne Colliery

Our 17-hectare site lies directly alongside the River Lippe – the ideal spot for our visionary double project. Once a key location for coal mining, the site will soon become home to two flagship projects: SURFWRLD and SCNCWAVE.

The River Lippe

The Lippe is a tributary of the Rhine, flowing 220 kilometres through North Rhine-Westphalia – including Werne, where it provides us with high-quality water via bank filtration for our vast wave basins at SURFWRLD and SCNCWAVE. And the view across the Lippe floodplains? Simply beautiful.

Our Facility

A glimpse at the plans for SURFWRLD and SCNCWAVE reveals one thing: something big is on the horizon. Discover one of the world’s most advanced wave facilities – a large-scale wave basin with cutting-edge wave technology, a rapid surfing area, beach volleyball courts, a coworking space and relaxing zones – plus great food and drinks in our onsite restaurant.

The PhotoFloat Project

PhotoFloat marks the first research project to be carried out at SCNCWAVE. Its goal: to develop improved support structures for floating photovoltaic systems. And this is just the start – more exciting research projects are already in the pipeline.

FAQ

When is the opening planned?

Preparations are in full swing! The first construction phase of our surf park is already largely planned. With the purchase of the former Zeche Werne site in December 2024, we reached another major milestone.
Construction is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2025. If all goes to plan, the research facility will go into operation in early 2027 – and the first surf season will kick off in spring 2027.

Why is it taking so long?

Fair question! A few facts and figures: Over five years of work on the official development plan, countless reports, expert assessments, calculations, planning meetings and documentation – in total, more than 80,000 pages of paperwork, 47,356 square metres of forest compensation, over €400,000 invested in environmental studies and expert reports, and €3 million in preliminary planning and consulting costs.
Big projects don’t happen overnight. That’s why we’re so proud of our team and strong network that supports us day after day. And believe us – we’re just as keen as you are to get started! 🏄‍♀️🏄‍♂️

Will SURFWRLD be open all year round?

📅 Yes! Both SURFWRLD and SCNCWAVE – the surf and research sides of our double project – will be open year-round.
Surfing sessions will primarily take place during the warmer months, while winter will focus more on research. Our food and drinks, events, rapid surfing, and coworking space will be open all year round. Exact details are still in the works.

What else can I do at SURFWRLD besides surfing?

Plenty! Look forward to rapid surfing (including indoor), fantastic food and drinks, beach volleyball, other water sports – and a few cool extras we’ll reveal soon.

How do I get to SURFWRLD?

Our surf park is located in Werne, on the eastern edge of Germany’s Ruhr area. Getting here is easy:

  • By bike: For example via the Lippe cycle path – bike parking spaces with charging stations for e-bikes are available on site.
  • By car: Parking spaces and charging stations for e-cars are available.
  • By bus and train: Our facility is well connected to the local public transport network.
  • By plane: Internationale travel is possible via Dortmund Airport (20 km) and Düsseldorf Airport (100 km).

We can’t wait to welcome you!

Are there camper van and motorhome pitches available?

🚐 Yes! You’ll find 49 natural-style camper pitches onsite, complete with power supply, sanitary facilities and a dump station. Many of the pitches are shaded beneath trees, as we’re keeping as much woodland as possible.
If you’re not travelling by camper, our surf camp – and later, a hotel – will offer you a comfy place to stay.

What surf levels is SURFWRLD suitable for?

🌊 Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned pro – SURFWRLD has the right wave for every level. Our surf courses are perfect if you’re looking to learn or improve your skills!

Can I book surf courses or a surf camp?

🏄‍♀️ Absolutely! We’ll offer individual surf lessons as well as full surf camp packages including accommodation and meals. More info will be published here soon.

What kind of wave technology do you use?

Our waves are created using compressed air. While the details are currently under wraps due to patenting, we can share this much: waves up to 2 metres high for surfing – and over 3 metres for research projects, plus special effects and wave fronts up to 150 metres wide.

Can I bring my own board and equipment?

Of course! You’re welcome to bring your own gear, no matter your level. We recommend softboards for beginners – included in our courses. As you progress, you can switch to harder boards.
Alternatively, you can rent, test or buy equipment directly from us – with or without a surf course.

Can I use a bodyboard or SUP?

If you’re at intermediate level or higher, you can join our regular surf sessions with a bodyboard – provided you’re confident and independent on it.
We’ll also be offering dedicated SUP sessions at specific times. Stay tuned!
